Royal Marines Storm Passenger Ferry During ‘Vital’ Training

Royal Marines have stormed a packed passenger ferry in the Channel as part of rehearsals for boarding drills. Using high-speed boats and specialist climbing equipment, commandos went aboard the vessel, ten miles off the English coast. Passengers on board the ferry watched from the upper decks as 16 specialist troops from 42 Commando, the Royal Marines’ Maritime Operations Unit, ascended on to the nine-deck vessel. With coxswains from 539 Assault Squadron piloting three fast craft, marines made the climb by cable ladder to the upper decks of the ferry, all while moving through the water at around 25mph. “The Royal Marines are one of only a few forces in the UK trained to conduct this sort of operation, so it is vital we do this training regularly, under the most arduous conditions possible,” said Captain Jack Denniss of 539 Assault Squadron. And in real time. Now that’s more ‘deft’ than ‘clambering’ I think you’d agree. pic.twitter.com/Kretv6H0pm 42 Commando is trained to carry out ‘level three’ boarding operations, which include those where a target vessel is obstructed by obstacles or manoeuvre. Capt Denniss said personnel must go through “rigorou...

Armoured cables are the ideal solution for any electric circuit that may be subject to physical

Armoured cables are the ideal solution for any electric circuit that may be subject to physical damage. In this context, armoured cables are most often used for fixed power installations in industrial applications, such as power distribution in a plantroom, where cables may be damaged by maintenance operations, for example. Clause 522.8.10 in BS7671 requires that cables buried in the ground shall incorporate an earthed armour. When the ground is opened again for maintenance, an unarmoured cable might be hit by excavation plant or even a spade, and damaged, and without any earthed protection, could lead to an electric shock. Single core power cables for AC voltages will incorporate a layer of protective aluminium armour (AWA), never steel. This is because a magnetic field is produced by the current in a single core cable which induces an electric current in any ferromagnetic armour material, such as steel, which could lead to the cable overheating. If this were to happen, the ‘magnetic losses’ would be prohibitive and massively de-rate the cable. The cores will also physically repel each other. (You can read more about this in section 521.5.2 of the 18th edition of th...

Sayonara, Sardines: Tiny Fish Are Just As Vulnerable To Collapse As La

An award-winning team of journalists, designers, and videographers who tell brand stories through Fast Company’s distinctive lens More than 70% of the world’s fisheries are currently being harvested at capacity or are in decline, but fish are also delicious and quite good for you. What’s a conscientious diner to do? The conventional wisdom has always been to avoid big fish at the top of the food chain–marlins, sharks, and tuna, for example–and focus on little fish, like sardines and anchovies, which have shorter lives and can reproduce more quickly. Not so anymore. Your fish choices just got even more complicated. 3d Cnc Foam Cutting Machine After analyzing over 200 scientific fisheries assessments, Stanford researchers found that small fish populations were just as likely to have collapsed in the past 50 years as larger fish, mainly due to overfishing. We’re literally killing all the fish. Small fish often die and reproduce faster than larger fish and, in general, population drops in small fish last five years on average, compared to 15 years for larger fish. But this isn’t always the case, according to the researchers. For example, one collapsed sardine fishery in Monte...

Many future retirees plan to delay filing for Social Security benefits, yet many end up seeking

Many future retirees plan to delay filing for Social Security benefits, yet many end up seeking benefits sooner rather than later. Readers frequently ask about the steps for reaching retirement with a healthy stock portfolio. Can you handle them? Once investors decide not to drown themselves in student debt, there are a few investing options to maximize the value of their stock portfolio. Think you’ve got the perfect retirement plan? Think again. We’ve found many new retirees end up modifying their plan after they retire. No plan is perfect, so investors need to remain open to considering alternatives. We’re going to cover: Many future retirees expect to begin drawing Social Security around 65. Like most beliefs about retirement, the actual results tell a different story. It would be reasonable to conclude that many people begin drawing Social Security earlier than they intended to. If the investor is terminated for any reason within 1 or 2 years of their retirement date, they may not wish to endure a job hunt. Even if they found a new position, they would still need to get through the orientation. Workers go through that process every day, but most are planning to continue work...

Infineon’s Planned Takeover of Cypress Semiconductor Is in Serious Trouble

Founded in 1993 by brothers Tom and David Gardner, The Motley Fool helps millions of people attain financial freedom through our website, podcasts, books, newspaper column, radio show, and premium investing services. Last June, German chipmaker Infineon (OTC:IFNNY) agreed to buy American chipmaker Cypress Semiconductor (NASDAQ:CY) for 9 billion euros ($10.3 billion). Cypress’ stock, which previously traded in the mid-teens, surged toward Infineon’s offer of $23.85 per share. However, Cypress’ stock recently gave up those gains after national security officials at the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS) recommended that President Trump block the deal. According to Bloomberg, CFIUS voiced concerns about Infineon’s dependence on China, which accounts for about a third of its revenue, and the sale of Cypress’ chips to those Chinese customers. Cypress sells chips to defense companies, including “defense grade memory” that can withstand “military operating temperature ranges.” However, these chips don’t include any sensitive technologies that aren’t offered by other chipmakers. CFIUS previously blocked I...

Egypt’s iconic Sphinx had a ‘distinctive astronomical’ moment with sun during equinox

Egypt Ministry of Antiquities reportedly said on March 19 that the Sphinx had a “distinctive astronomical” moment with the sun during the spring equinox when, in a shining flourish, the sunset on the shoulder of the half-man, half-lion statue. The Ministry reportedly said that the rare phenomenon happens twice a year during the spring in March and the fall equinox in September. It is believed that the earth’s axis does not point toward or away from the sun, during the equinox which means that the Northern and Southern hemispheres receive equal amounts of sunlight. In addition, it means the day and night are equal in length. READ: Secret Chamber: Archaeologists Find Opening Decorated With Centaurs And A Sphinx Inside Nero’s Palace In Rome. Pictures Inside The iconic half-man, half-lion is carved out of limestone bedrock. The Sphinx is also strategically placed for the summer solstice in June, when the sun sets between the pyramids of pharaohs Khufu and Khafre, as per reports. As per reports, the Sphinx’s position during the equinoxes and summer solstice suggests that the ancient Egyptians purposefully positioned the hybrid lion-man statue. Pedestal S...

Thermaltake Toughpower PF1 ARGB 1200W Power Supply Review

Thermaltake’s Toughpower PF1 ARGB power supply with 1200W capacity achieves high performance, and it is built like a tank. It isn’t so quiet, though. The Thermaltake Toughpower PF1 ARGB with 1200W max power is a high-end and super expensive power supply, offering good performance along with RGB lighting features. Its major downside is the noisy operation. The Corsair HX1200 and the similar-capacity Asus Rog Thor power supplies offer equally high performance along with much lower noise output.  Thermaltake’s Toughpower PF1 ARGB line consists of three models, with 850W, 1050W, and 1200W capacities. As the naming scheme implies, those units feature RGB lighting, so they are ideal for users with windowed chassis. All three are based on a Channel Well Technology (CWT) platform, and the build quality is high. Unfortunately, the price tags are also high, while the availability is restricted since Thermaltake had to pull from all major US stores those products, because of the recent tariffs in PC parts that are made in China. Currently, the US users can only buy a Toughpower PF1 unit through Thermaltake’s ttpremium store.  The PF1 1200W utilizes a fully modula...
